The 3× rule (the only formula you need)

Minimum comfortable viewing distance (ft) ≈ pixel pitch (mm) × 3

Pixel pitch is simply the gap in millimeters between neighboring LED pixels. Stand close to a coarse screen and you see the dots; step back and they fuse into a seamless image. The fusion point is roughly 3 feet per millimeter of pitch — a P4 screen looks flawless from about 12 feet, a P1.5 from under 5 feet.

Here's the money insight the industry doesn't lead with: finer pitch than your viewing distance requires is invisible money. Going from P2.5 to P1.2 can nearly double a project's cost, and from 20 feet away, no human eye can tell the difference. Common questions

What does pixel pitch actually mean?

The distance in millimeters between the centers of two neighboring pixels. P2.5 = 2.5mm gaps. Smaller number = tighter pixels = sharper up close = more expensive.

Is finer pitch always better?

No — it's better only until your viewing distance stops rewarding it. Past the 3× rule distance, extra fineness is invisible and can nearly double your cost. Match pitch to your closest real viewer, then stop.

Why do outdoor screens use coarser pitch?

Outdoor viewers stand farther away, and outdoor panels prioritize 5,000+ nit brightness, weatherproofing, and serviceability. P4–P10 covers nearly every outdoor case perfectly.

What pitch for a home LED wall?

Seating at 8–15 feet calls for P1.2–P1.9 — a 4K-class, seamless image at 120–160 inches. Micro-pitch (P0.9) looks incredible but roughly doubles cost for sharpness you can't perceive past 8 feet.
