Brightness: why "lumens" mislead you

Projector marketing talks in lumens — the light leaving the lens. But what your eyes see is the light coming off the screen, measured in nits, and that same light gets spread across the whole image area. That's how a monster 10,000-lumen projector ends up delivering only around 200–300 nits on screen. An indoor LED wall doesn't reflect light — every pixel is a light source — and typical panels output 1,000+ nits, roughly 3–5x brighter than a projected image.

In practice that one difference decides most installations. Sanctuary with stained glass or stage wash? Storefront window fighting the sun? Living room where people actually keep lights on? The projected image goes gray; the LED wall doesn't care.

The projector wins the day you buy it and loses slowly after. Traditional lamps last around 3,000 hours and cost $500–$1,500 each time. A venue running 40 hours a week burns through a lamp roughly every 18 months. Laser projectors improved this — about 20,000 hours — but they dim measurably as they age, and by the time a heavy-use venue crosses year five, the total spent on projection typically catches up to what the LED wall cost upfront. From there the LED wall runs essentially free: the panels are rated for around 100,000 hours, and there's no bulb, no filter, and no scheduled service. If a single module ever fails, it swaps out in about a minute without replacing the display.

When the projector is genuinely the right call
